Alex Amelines comes from a background in Graphic Design. I graduated in Colombia in 1994 and worked in one the largest Publishing Companies in the country for just over 5 years designing for print, mostly big books and magazines. In the year 2000 I came to England looking to expand my knowledge in traditional animation. I used to do small pieces in my spare time and I wanted to learn more as well as travel abroad.
After my summer course at Central Saint Martins I was offered the chance to work full time for design studio Blueberry.Net down at Chelsea Harbour. One day one of the founders Russ Sellers was showing his son around the studio and when they reached my desk Russ pointed at me saying “This is the dude who makes characters with one huge eye”. The words stuck and that’s how I chose the name. It started as a small collection of animations I did then ‘The New Guy’ and ‘True Lice’ but they never made it to the second episode for some reason, probably because I was busy learning so many new things in this new field I lacked enough spare time. The website started gathering all sorts of pieces I was creating at the time and a news section featuring those nice finds you bump into every day on the web. I think in part the news section one of the strongest reasons why people keep coming back.
In the last couple of years I’ve been tidying the site up and removing unrelated material, separating portfolio from this little world of monsters and spiky orange hair. I am currently working on my most ambitious animation project so far, it’s a short animated story involving a dark lord who suffers from incontinence, a randy princess, a couple of clueless knights and a narcoleptic king. I’m using the project to both satisfy my need to tell stories and learn 3D animation. Is a large learning curve but I am full of determination. It should be fun.
